Bachman - Wilson House

The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, in Bentonville, Arkansas, now counts among its impressive holdings an icon of midcentury residential architecture: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Bachman-Wilson House. One of his economical Usonian homes, it was built along New Jersey’s Millstone River in 1954. In recent years periodic flooding threatened the concrete-and-mahogany dwelling, so the owners put it on the market—with the caveat that it be resurrected in an appropriate new locale. Crystal Bridges took up the challenge, disassembling the 1,700-square-foot structure and moving it more than 1,200 miles to the museum’s Moshe Safdie–designed campus. In homage to Wright’s original vision, the house was reconstructed beside another body of water: the Crystal Spring, which thankfully doesn’t flood.
