VENICE BY THE SEA

Venice was conceived by Abbott Kenny, complete with canals, gondolas,classic wooden and brick bridges, in the late 1890's. Gondola operators wearing boatneck shirts with large black stripes would be ferrying passengers along Windward Ave shown here in the first photo. The canals were paved over I think around the late 1920's or early 30's due to the popularity of the automobile and a lack of a filtration system for the canal waters. The dozen canals still in existence were spared the same fate by Howard Hughes in the late 1960's and the canal front homes were restored. Today these homes are some of the most desired pieces of real estate in Los Angeles County.  

HINANOS is a staple in Venice. Opened in 1963, it's owner was part of the camera crew that went to Tahiti to film the movie MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, the second of 3 versions starring Marlon Brando. Not only was the camera man inspired, upon his return from Tahiti, to open a little beachfront bar named after Tahiti's favorite beer, he also returned with a Tahitian wife.
